Our Movie Sponsorships
SGI Property Management is helping to fund 2 different documentaries:
The first documentary we helped fund was “Dishonesty”. This movie, produced by international best selling author and Duke behavioral economist/psychologist Dan Ariely, looks at the subject of Dishonesty. It will be released in Spring 2015.
You can watch a talk by Dan Ariely about Dishonesty here
Why did SGI help sponsor this movie? We’d like to make a small contribution to more honesty especially in the real estate business.
Talking about dishonestly makes it harder to hide it. We like honesty and straight talk at SGI; it fits with who we are.
The second movie we are helping fund is “Billion Dollar Bully”, a movie about Yelp.
Yelp is a site intended to help a consumer see how past customers rate their experience at a particular business.
And if that was what Yelp actually did, we would fully support it.
However there is a darker side to Yelp. Yelp appears to strong arm small businesses in order to get them to advertise with them.
Here is an article in a San Francisco area newspaper, the area where Yelp is headquartered, titled “Yelp and the Business of Extortion 2.0”
Techcrunch first reported the lawsuits here
Here is one comment from an article in the New York Post
Last year, a lawyer serving as a small-claims judge in San Diego likened Yelp to a “modern-day version of the Mafia going to stores and saying, `You want to not be bothered? You want to not have incidents in your store? Pay us protection money.’”
After hearing these stories, SGI Property Management chose to help fund this documentary in hopes that the truth will come out about Yelp. Reviews are an important piece of the puzzle for anyone to have when selecting a service or product, but not when strong arm tactics motivated by money alter the free flow of information to the consumer.
